Amusing Musings

Morning bonding

I’ve always loved breakfast (most important meal of the day!), but these days, the 20 minutes I spend eating breakfast before going to UCSD are sometimes the best part of my day. My mom still wakes up in the morning to cook or prepare something for my breakfast or lunch - even if I tell her not to because I’m just going to eat Cheerios, she insists of scrambling up some eggs-and-tomatoes or cooking wontons for me to bring for lunch (by the way, 99 Ranch Market has awesome spinach wontons - they taste great if you just mix them with soy sauce and sesame seed oil). I lead a privileged life, at least when it comes to food.

So weekday mornings, I sit at the counter eating my breakfast as my mom busies herself with something in the kitchen. Somehow I think morning conversations are different than evening ones. In the morning, I feel like my mind is fresh, not weighed down or occupied by events that have happened during the day. Our conversations are never very serious. This morning, Mom told me about a show she discovered on a Chinese channel that teaches lessons for basically everything in life, from using egg whites to get rid of blackheads (she’s already prepared egg whites for me to try it - I’m not sure if I will) to adding mangoes to blended juices to prevent them from being too frothy. This is such a Mom show. She loves picking up random tips (and readily relaying them to me) and adding something new to routine things. I wonder what she’ll share with me next breakfast.
